Photos of the Blue Man

For this project I decided to take photographs of the small blue man from my care package. I chose him because he was the most unusual object on my desk. Below are my three favorite photographs.

The focus of the first photograph is depth of field. I was trying to emphasize the size of the blue man by showing how small he is in comparison to his surroundings, such as the tree in the background. Using a low depth of field ensured that the blue man remained the focus of the picture without eliminating all of his surroundings.

I achieved this effect with the blue man by placing him in a plant. This photo makes good use of the rule of thirds. The blue man is in the left third of the photo, where the second vertical line on the gird would be. The photo also uses color to emphasize its subject. By contrasting the bright blue of the blue man with the neutral browns of the plant, I ensured that the viewer's eye goes directly to the blue man. I also tried to juxtapose textures in this photograph by placing the smooth, plastic blue man in front of the rough, dead plant stalks.

For this shot I placed the blue man in a glass of water and shined a flashlight near the water. In this photograph, I was trying to use color to set the mood. The light causes the water to take on the neon blue of the blue man, giving the entire shot a neon blue tint. This color, combined with the way the light hits the blue man's arm, gives the shot a surreal, almost alien, feel. This photo also utilizes the rule of thirds. The blue man is placed in the right third of the photograph. Again, I tried to contrast texture by placing the flawless plastic of the blue man next to the fingerprints and scratches on the glass.
